Research Intern
We have an opening for a Research Intern in the Microtechnology, Medicine and Biology (MMB) lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (https://mmblab.cancer.wisc.edu). The MMB lab is engaged in multiple areas of research including cancer (basic and translational studies), multi-kingdom interactions and microtechnology solutions to study cell behavior and interactions, within a multi-disciplinary environment. The MMB lab is located in the Wisconsin Institute for Medical Research (attached to the UW Hospital and Clinics).
The open position provides an exciting opportunity to contribute to an ongoing translational research study that uses physiologically relevant models to further our understanding of head and neck cancer and patient treatment outcomes. The successful candidate will isolate cells from surgical tissue specimens and blood samples and assist with building models that will be used to investigate functional changes in cell behavior.
Degree and area of specialization:
BS or BA required with an emphasis on cell biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, immunology or related fields. While not required, background/experience in some or all of cell culture, RNA isolation, microscopy, processing clinical tissue samples, and fabrication of microfluidic devices would be highly advantageous. Proficiency in Excel, Prism/Graphpad and Adobe Illustrator would also be desired. The ideal candidate is expected to be a productive, creative individual with the ability to think critically and an excellent attention to detail. They should be able to learn quickly and function both independently and within a team.
Principal duties:
The individual will assist with processing of surgical tissue samples and blood samples, cell culture, preparation of microfluidic devices and performing assays. The individual will be expected to work with human clinical samples. The individual will be responsible for data entry into online databases, documenting and communicating their research findings and preparing presentations as well as identifying and addressing research challenges as they arise. The applicant will assist with data acquisition, analysis and interpretation. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to expand their knowledge/skill set in a dynamic multi-disciplinary environment.
